As you may remember, schools officially count the number of students enrolled on the 3rd Friday in September and the 2nd Friday in January.
Per Greg Hartjes, on the 3rd Friday in September, 2020, AASD’s enrollment stood at 15,710. As of the 2nd Friday in January, that number dropped to 15,282, a decrease of 428 from September alone.
In past years they typically had approximately 16,067 students enrolled. In fact, until recently, their website listed an enrollment figure of 16,302.
We are looking at the departure of potentially over 1,000 students and a decrease of between 5% and 6% of AASD’s student body since the 2019/2020 school year.
This comes on the heels of the revelation that 28% of Appleton high schoolers are failing at least one class and that the AASD administrative team, lead by Superintendent Judy Baseman and overseen by the AASD Board of Education, has not been tracking student grades in a systematic manner and has no baseline to determine how student performance has been impacted by AASD’s coronavirus response.
The Board of Education’s response to the information both that over a quarter of high schoolers are failing and that the administrative team has not been tracking grades in a systematic and coherent manner left something to be desired. Will they respond with greater urgency to the fact that they have potentially lost over 1,000 students since last school year?
