The Appleton Area School District Board of Education is meeting 09/11/2023 at 6PM. There are not a lot of items on the agenda.
The Board will be voting on educator contract changes, new hires, and resignations.
They will also be considering and voting on a lease agreement for a new site for the District’s employee health clinic. The lease for the current Connecting Care Clinic is expiring at the end of the year and the cost to renew it is cost-prohibitive. They would like to move to a new location run by Thedacare. The cost in 2024 would be $77,761 which, per the memo, would actually be a slight decrease from the 2023 lease cost.
Finally, the District Executive Team is requesting approval to form a committee called the “Student Attendance Committee”. The purpose of the committee would be “to develop further interventions to support students and families who are struggling with consistent daily attendance.” The committee would have around 40 members including 3-5 community at-large members, 6 parents of AASD students, and 4-6 cultural leaders.
[I understand that Superintendent Greg Hartjes was not the superintendent during Covid, but there is at least some degree of absurdity to the fact that AASD actively shut down schools and when it opened up made school uncomfortable and difficult to attend but now is acting like absenteeism is a big concern that needs to be responded to. One would hope that shift signals that District leadership intends to never shut its schools down again or put up barriers to attendance as was done during Covid.]
