Finance Committee Holds Wheel Tax Resolution Until 05/20/2024 Meeting – Asks Staff To Provide Information On Amount Of Additional Revenue Expected And State Statues Governing Wheel Taxes

The Finance Committee met 05/06/2024. One of the items on the agenda was the resolution that would increase the wheel tax by $10 per year per vehicle.

This item was placed on hold until the 05/20/2024 Finance Committee meeting because Alderperson Brad Firkus (District 3) who was one of the two signers of this resolution was unable to attend the 05/06 meeting and, therefore, could not participate in the discussion.

Alderperson Nate Wolff (District 12), the other author of the resolution, was fine waiting until the 20th to take it up and did not have any information or thoughts he wanted to provide during the 05/06 meeting.

Ahead of the 05/20 meeting, committee members asked staff to provide information on the following issues/questions:

  • How much more money was this wheel tax increase expected to bring in?
  • What projects would the increase in funds cover?
  • Outside of the wheel tax, what else is the city doing to either find additional revenue or cut expenses in order to fund more projects?
  • What are the state statute parameters or restrictions around wheel taxes.

I’ve prepared a transcript of the discussion such as it was for download:
