The City Plan Commission met 04/24/2024. One of the items they took up was a request to approve a special use permit to establish a tavern inside the garage storage space located at the gas station at 1201 N Badger Avenue, which is the gas station at the corner of Badger and Sharon. This item had an associated public hearing.
Two residents provided feedback on the permit. One, an adjacent neighbor expressed support for the permit and then other, a business located further down the street, expressed opposition. The commission ended up voting unanimously to approve the special use permit.
I’ve prepared a transcript of the discussion for download:
Paul, the owner of the Active Bike And Fitness building that is attached to the gas station building attended the public hearing. He indicated that he had initially opposed the special use permit but after talking with city staff he had changed his opinion. It sounded like he had also talked to the owner of the gas station, and his understanding now was that the gas station owner was going to put up a 9 foot 6 inch chain-link fence between the two back lots. Additionally, Paul had 7 security cameras in his back lot which he thought would provide sufficient security.
Another nearby business owner was not able to attend but did contact the city via phone and email. The owner of Badger Chiropractic just down the street from the gas station expressed her opposition to the special use permit. She indicated cleanliness was not maintained at the gas station and there had been drug related issues in the neighborhood. She was worried opening a tavern in the are would result in more issues.
The commission did not have any questions or engage in discussion and voted unanimously to approve the special use permit request.
