Safety And Licensing Committee Votes To Hold Alcohol License Premise Amendment From OB’s Brau Haus To Give Police Department More Time To Review Application

The Safety and Licensing Committee met 04/10/2024. One of the items that was briefly discussed was the Alcohol License Premise Amendment submitted by OB’s Brau Haus that is needed for them to be able to be able to provide outdoor dining in front of their building along College Avenue from 4PM to 10PM. Another item needed was a minor amendment to their special use permit which was already approved by the City Plan Commission.

The item ended up being held for 2 weeks to provide the Police Department an opportunity to take a closer look at it due to concerns about the establishment and that area of College Avenue.

I’ve prepared a transcript of the discussion for download:

OB’s Brau Haus recently received 150 demerits to their alcohol license as the result of a semi-nude dancing incident, and the Walnut Street/State Street/500 block of College Avenue has been the location of several incidents of violence recently including a non-fatal shooting in November and a fatal shooting on Christmas Eve.

One can guess those may be some of the issues that prompted the Police Department to want to take a closer look at this application. Police Chief Polly Olson said that the application had not been run past the upper command staff. Normally, that was not an issue, but in this specific case she did want to be able to take a closer look at it.

The committee voted 4-0 to approve the request to hold the item until the 04/24/2024 Safety and Licensing Committee meeting.
