Municipal Services Committee Votes 4-1 To Change Yard Waste Site Hours – Would Provide 7 Day A Week Service In Summer, Eliminate Weekend Hours In Winter

The Municipal Services Committee met 02/26/2024. They briefly took up a request from staff to modify the hours of operation for the city’s two yard waste sites. Currently, both the Glendale and Whitman sites are open Friday-Monday during the summer. During the winter the Glendale site is open Friday-Monday and the Whitman site is closed.

Staff requested to stagger their summer hours, so that Glendale would continue to be open Friday through Monday but Whitman would be open Tuesday through Friday, thus providing 7 day a week service across both locations.

Staff also asked to change Glendale’s winter hours so that instead of being open Friday through Sunday, the site would be open Monday through Friday.

This proposal passed by a vote of 4-1 with Alderperson Vered Meltzer (District 2) passing the dissenting nay vote.

I’ve prepared a transcript of the discussion for download:

Alderperson Alex Schultz (District 9) expressed some concern that the only site that would be open in the winter would not have weekend access. He asked if it would be possible to adjust the hours in the future if they receive feedback from constituents saying they need weekend access.

Director of Public Works Danielle Block responded they were always open to entertaining changes and receiving feedback. She noted that currently, in the winter, the Glendale site receives an average of 13 customers per day on winter weekends and they believed those numbers were going to decrease now that they had eliminated the garbage dumpsters.

Alderperson Meltzer (District 2) recognized the positives in the proposal but struggled to support it because of the opposition to the elimination of weekend hours in the winter voiced by District 2 residents.

The proposal passed by a vote of 4-1 with Alderperson Meltzer casting the dissenting vote.
