The Parks and Recreation Committee is meeting 06/12/2023 at 6:15PM.
They have two items on the agenda, both of which are resolutions.
The first resolution they will be taking up is Resolution 5-R-23 which was introduced at the most recent Common Council meeting. This resolution calls for the City of Appleton to join the Wisconsin Local Government Climate Coalition.
The second resolution they will be taking up is Resolution 4-R-23. This resolution was held twice, first at the 04/24/2023 committee meeting due to concerns about possibly not having met public notice requirements, and again at the 05/08/2023 committee meeting after it was determined that the park would, given its state, be left unmowed as a matter of default during May. As currently written, this resolution calls for the city of observe No Mow May within the Ellen Kort Peace Park during the month of May, and although not written in the resolution, that No Mow May observance was supposed to only be for May 2023.
The park is currently being reseeded after having had sidewalks installed, so much of the park was dirt, and the geese have been doing a good job of keeping the grass that was present to a short length, so the resolution as written was not necessary. Additionally, there were potential staffing and logistical issues that would result from allowing the grass to grow unchecked. As a result, the committee decided to hold the resolution a second time in order to give Alderperson Alex Schultz (District 9) and Director of Parks, Recreation, and Facilities Dean Gazza time to look further into ideas for how Ellen Kort Peace Park could be utilized during No Mow May without necessarily leaving it unmowed for the entire month.
Beyond those two action items, the committee will also be receiving updates on Reid Golf Course, Recreation summer programing, and Parks projects.
