The Appleton Area School District Board of Education is meeting 05/08/2023 at 6PM.
Perhaps most notably, the Board will be receiving as an item of discussion a proposed name for the new elementary school. Per a memo when the District purchased the land for the new school back in 1999, the seller placed an item in the purchase agreement requiring the school which would eventually be built on that site to be named Sandy Slope Elementary after the name of the school he attended as a child.
Other items they will be voting on include:
- The purchase of a textbook for 11th grade United States History and the approval of digital resources for Social Studies
- A revision of the employee handbook regarding paid time for family medical leave allowing employees to substitute up to 12 weeks of accrued paid time off for unpaid Family Medical Leave. The cost of the changes to the District would be between $23,000 and $80,000 annually.
- The issuance of a high school diploma to a veteran. A 1999 Wisconsin law allows schools to issue high school diplomas to veterans who left high school to join the armed forces during a war period. The District received a request to award a diploma to Armin Barth who left school at the age of 14 an enlisted in the US Merchant Marines in 1942 following the attack on Pearl Harbor. [Side note: I’m assume this Armin Barth is the same Armin Barth whose red wagon disappeared and then was safely returned to him back in 2020.]
The Board will also receive the School/Student Services report which includes information on proposed instructional materials purchases and the transfer of the Achievement Gap Reduction contract from Columbus Elementary to Highlands Elementary.
