The CEA (Central Equipment Agency) Review Committee is meeting 04/11/2022. The committee meets infrequently on an as-needed basis and is in charge of the vehicle fleet for the city.
They will be voting on several requests to purchase, upgrade, or downgrade vehicles as well as approving the 2022 seasonal vehicles for various departments.
City staff is requesting to downgrade a landscape truck and upgrade a chipper when they are replaced in 2023. They estimate the net savings would be $1,677. [I’m not sure how trustworthy cost estimates are for anything that will be purchased in 2023 given the current inflation we’re experiencing.]
Staff is also requesting permission to upgrade one of their traffic sedans to a Hybrid Electric Vehicle when the current sedan is replaced in 2023. The memo does not give a total overall cost for the new sedan but states that the upgrade will cost $1,416 and that that money will be made up with savings on gas costs. [I was unaware that the cost of a hybrid electric vehicle and of a regular fully gas-powered car was so similar.]
The Fire Department is requesting to purchase a Pierce Ultimate Configuration (PUC) fire engine. It will take almost 2 years to receive the truck after ordering it. Although the city would not have to pay until delivery, they could save at least $55,200 by paying for the vehicle before 05/01/2022. [I kind of think that things like this are what the city’s Covid relief money ought to have been spent on wherever possible—keeping overall taxpayer costs down by staying ahead of inflation on basic necessary infrastructure and equipment needs.]
