Alderperson Denise Fenton Apologizes For Comment Made On Mike Schinke’s Campaign Page – “not [a] comment on anyone’s right to run […] I also believe that we can move past our mistakes if we acknowledge them in good faith. I hope that is the case here.”

Alderperson Denise Fenton (District 6) has responded to my email asking her about the comment she had left on Board of Education candidate Mike Schinke’s campaign page. She acknowledges the comment was ill-advised, says she called Mr. Schinke and apologized to him, and clarifies that her reference was to the election being over and “not any comment on anyone’s right to run.” She concluded by saying, “I also believe that we can move past our mistakes if we acknowledge them in good faith. I hope that is the case here.”

Below is the full text of her email:

First of all, apologies for the delay in my response to your email. As we discovered when I messaged you, the email landed in the junk email folder in my city account. I confess that I don’t understand the algorithm that they use, as constituent email occasionally lands there as well.

My response to you is that I made an ill-advised comment on social media during an election night celebration with a number of my friends. My reference was to the election being over, not any comment on anyone’s right to run. I mentioned in a sendoff for alderpersons leaving the Common Council on Wednesday evening that I know that no one runs for local office for any motive other than wanting to make their community better and I truly believe that.

I saw a comment about the post the next day, took my comment down and didn’t think anything of it until I got messages this morning and saw your comment that I had not responded to your inquiry.

I called Mr. Schinke this morning and apologized for said ill-advised comment. I believe we had a productive discussion and that we both realize that candidates for public office and public office holders are all human and can make human mistakes. I also believe that we can move past our mistakes if we acknowledge them in good faith. I hope that is the case here.***
