The Utilities Committee is meeting 10/12/2021 at 5PM. They have two action items on the agenda.
One is a request to approve a change order to a storm water services contract.
The item I would expect to be of the most interest to Appleton residents is the request to approve a wastewater rate increase of 4% to be effective January 1. This would come on the heels of a 20% increase that took place this year, and would be the first in a series of a total of five 4% increases that are slated to take place from 2022-2026.

This rate increase comes after the fact that, this year…
- The Common Council voted to, effective April 2022, revamp and make less generous the city’s leaf, yard waste, and bulky overflow pickup policy.
- The Common Council approved a contract with a consulting company to investigate the possibility of creating a transportation utility in Appleton.
- Appleton had a 2021 Excess General Fund Balance of $5.115 million dollars.
- The Council will be voting on nearly $7 million of Federal American Recovery Plan Act money and stands to take in a total of nearly $15 million in ARPA funding.
[At this point, I feel like it’s fair and reasonable for the public to ask why the city is not able to provide the basic functions of a city without constantly increasing taxes and utility rates and when any of this money that’s been flying around this last year is going to trickle down to us in the form of decreased rates.]
