4 Candidates Vying For Board Of Education Post To Be Filled 02/08/2021

On 02/08/2021 the Board of Education will be choosing a candidate to fill the current board vacancy. As you may recall, this seat is vacant because Leah Olson resigned and Ed Ruffolo, the Board’s first choice to fill the seat, declined to accept the appointment in the face of public outrage over his social media history.

On 02/08/2021 the Board will have 4 candidates to choose from (in order of their applications):

Sheri Hartzheim
Katherine Van Groll
James Clemons
Stephanie Burry

Sheri Hartzheim is the only one of the candidates who will be on the April 6 ballot for a school board position. She was also a candidate for the appointment back in January but was not chosen.

Katherine Van Groll was also a candidate for the appointment and was one of the 3 individuals who made it to the second round, eventually being passed over in favor of Ed Ruffolo.

James Clemons is a former, long-time alderperson who ran for mayor last year, losing out to Jake Woodford.

Stephanie Burry is the parent of a student at Appleton West and a long-time teacher. An internet search indicates that a Stephanie Burry is a 6th grade ELA and Social Studies teacher at Little Chute Intermediate School and also that a Stephanie Burry has donated to the Appleton Education Foundation. [A fact that is worth noting because the Board of Education is currently heavily dominated by individuals involved with the Appleton Education Foundation.]
