I have heard back from the Appleton Area School District regarding medical exemptions for masking. As I posted about previously, Superintendent Judy Baseman had stated very plainly, “The District will not be determining which health issues/concerns ‘legitimately warrant being able to go mask free’. That determination must be made by appropriate medical professionals, as outlined in our attached Accommodation Request form.” At the same time, the medical exemption form stated that the school nurse would “follow up with physician’s office to clarify the need for the accommodation request” which gave the impression that a medical exemption was not necessarily as clear cut as simply getting a doctor to attest that a child should not be wearing a mask.
AASD employee Kylie Harwell looked into that further and got back to me. She states in her email that, at this point, they don’t believe they have denied any medical exemptions and that the statement on the medical exemption form was included to “ensure there would be a connection to the doctor.”
