Utilities Committee Meeting 04/26/2022 – YTD Water Main Breaks Are Up 33% Compared To 2021’s Already Near Record Breaking Numbers

The Utilities Committee is meeting 04/26/2022 at 5PM.

The meeting only has two action items, one of which is to elect a vice-chair and the other which is to approve the acceptance of the Department of Natural Resources Safe Drinking Water Loan Program Grant of $505,000 for replacement of private lead service lines in Appleton.

Information items include a review of the 2021 GTLC Annual Report and the various monthly reports related to water and wastewater services. Of note, in 2021, Appleton experienced the most water main breaks since 2014 and the second highest number of water main breaks since 2000. This year we already seem on track to outpace the number of water main breaks we experienced last year. In 2020 we had 15 water main breaks by the end of March, in 2021 that increased to 45, and now in 2022 we’re already at 60.

[Honestly, the year over year increase in water main breaks seems kind of serious. Alderperson Chad Doran (District 15) just introduced a resolution calling for the reallocation of $6 million in ARPA funds to cover the cost of replacing old, undersized water mains. It will be interesting to see what the staff’s recommendations are in regards to that resolution.]
