City Plan Commission Meeting 03/26/2025 – Will Vote On Selfie Sculpture Withdrawal Request, Special Use Permit For Parking Lot Behind Chase Bank Development

The City Plan Commission is meeting 03/26/2025 at 3:30PM.

They have two action items on the agenda.

One of the items is the proposed selfie-sculpture that Appleton Downtown Inc had been seeking permission to install in Houdini Plaza. The aluminum sculpture featured locator pins with cutouts in which people could pose.

The installation was intended to drive social media engagement. ADI had hoped to have the sculpture installed by NFL Draft Day; however, the price of materials turned out to be higher than expected and the negative feedback they received from the public gave them pause. During the 03/19/2025 Common Council meeting, ADI Executive Director Jennifer Stephany requested that the item be referred back to committee so that ADI could retool the design. She has now put in a formal request with staff to withdraw the proposal for the selfie sculpture, indicating that they will resubmit a new proposal at a later date.

The commission will also be reviewing a request to approve a special use permit for a standalone off-street parking lot located at 131 N Appleton Street. This is the location of the Chase Bank parking lot in downtown Appleton. The owner of the lot wants to expand the off-street parking options with upwards of 67 parking spaces to serve the people utilizing the commercial and residential spaces in the redeveloped Chase Bank building. City staff is recommending approval of the request.
