The Appleton Area School District Board of Education is meeting 12/09/2024 at 6PM.
The item on the agenda that will probably be of most interest to the public is the discussion about the repurposing of Columbus Elementary School. The school currently has low enrollment rates, a total capacity of only 135, and “a disproportionate number of inexperienced and/or out-of-field teachers.”
The AASD leadership team would like to move Columbus students to a different school and repurpose the Columbus building for use as an alternative education space. Columbus is already used for two district-wide special education programs and a Title 1 preschool. Additionally, it could also be used for
- Students placed outside of the district due to their significant education needs
- Additional RISE program students
- Students who are under an abeyance agreement
