Board Of Building Inspection Meeting 10/09/2024 – Will Vote On Variance Request For House From 1800s With Existing Stairs That Are Too Narrow

The Board of Building Inspection is meeting 10/09/2024 at 2PM.

They have one item on the agenda which is a request from a property owner to be able to maintain a 30” wide staircase to the second floor of the house even though the Uniform Dwelling Code requires stairs to be 36” wide.

The house was built back in the 1800s, well before the Uniform Dwelling Code was adapted, and has served as both a residential and commercial property. Earlier this year it was rezoned from a commercial property to a residential property so that it could be converted into a two-family dwelling.

The stairs are existing and cannot be widened to 36”. As an alternative to installing wider stairs which does not seem practical, the property owner is proposing installing an industrial fire ladder as a secondary means of escape in the event of a fire.
