Common Council Accepts Firehouse Subgrant For $24,000 – Will Cover Purchase Cost Of 8 Video Laryngoscopes

The Common Council met 04/17/2024. One of the items that was separated out for an individual vote was the Fire Department request to accept a Firehouse Sub Grant for roughly $24,000 to cover the cost of eight McGrath video laryngoscopes.

This item was spoken about briefly at the Safety and Licensing Committee meeting and then Mayor Woodford asked for it to be separated out at the Common Council meeting so that he could highlight the good work the Fire Department was doing looking for grant opportunities.

I’ve prepared transcripts of the Safety and Licensing Committee discussion and the Common Council discussion for download:

Fire Chief Jeremy Hansen explained that when they needed to put a tube in someone’s throat, they needed to lift up the jaw and look right at the vocal cords. A video laryngoscope would allow them to not have to put their faces right over a patient’s mouth which would reduce the transfer of fluids from one person to another. Additionally, the video laryngoscope helped reduce the amount of head manipulation that was needed, which was important if a patient had suspected trauma to the neck or spine.

Mayor Woodford took a moment to express appreciation for the work the Fire Department was doing to go after every grant they could.
