During the 03/20/2024 Common Council meeting, Alderperson Israel Del Toro (District 4) introduced two resolutions pertaining to pesticide use. Both of these resolutions were referred to staff for review, so when they are taken up at the committee-level Alderperson Del Toro will no longer be on the Council because his term is ending in April and he opted to not seek reelection. However, they were both cosponsored by Alderpersons Vered Meltzer (District 2) and Alex Schultz (District 9) who will still be active Council members.
The first resolution he submitted is Resolution 3-R-24 which calls for the city to develop a website that provides education to Appleton residents on best practices for pesticide and fertilizer use as well as well as “best practices for pollinator, tree, biodiversity and clean water conservation and protection.”
The second resolution is Resolution 4-R-24 regarding the sustainable and responsible use of chemical pesticides in Appleton. If passed, it would require the city to no longer purchase or use the chemical pesticides listed in the resolution, “no longer contract services that include the use of the potentially dangerous chemical herbicides” listed in the resolution, and to “publicly release information regarding the chemical pesticides are [sic] used in city-owned property.” It also includes an exceptions clause allowing the Board of Health to permit the use of banned pesticides on a case-by-case basis; however, in such a case “the city must clearly communicate the use of chemical pesticides to the community users of public spaces.”
Both of these resolutions were referred to staff for further review.
