The Common Council met 03/06/2024. One of the items they separated out for an individual vote was the request to update the lighting near the intersection of Walnut Street and College Avenue. This was the location of the 12/24/2023 shooting that left one man dead, and the upgrades are aimed at improving safety.
The item was approved unanimously by the Common Council.
I’ve prepared a transcript of the discussion for download:
The Municipal Services Committee unanimously approved the upgrades but also expressed interest in similar lighting updates being done to other intersections in the downtown area. At the Common Council meeting, Alderperson William Siebers (District 1) reiterated his desire to see further lighting updates implemented and specifically mentioned the 100 block of South State Street as a likely candidate.
Without any further discussion, the Council voted 12-0 to approve the lighting upgrades to the Walnut/College intersection.
After the vote, Mayor Woodford indicated that staff would be monitoring how the changes impacted the area of Walnut and College and would come forward with additional recommendations if appropriate.
