The Transit Commission is meeting 02/27/2024 at 2:50PM.
They have three action items on the agenda.
The first is the routine approval of January payments.
The second is a request for authorization to award a 3 year contract to Running Inc to provide Valley Transit’s paratransit services. Running Inc current provides Valley Transit’s paratransit services, notably the Valley Transit II service, the curb to curb transportation service provided to elderly and disabled individuals who are unable to use the fixed route bus system.
The third is a request for authorization to award a 2-year contract to Lamers Bus Lines to provide the downtown trolley service. Lamers has provided the trolley service since 2007. In 2022, they refused to provide the service unless they received a payment increase of over $5,000 even though their contract with Valley Transit had automatically renewed and they were outside the 90-day period in which they could have cancelled or asked for changes. The Transit Commission and the Common Council did eventually vote to approve the payment increase but not without expressing frustration with Lamers.
Lamers was the only company that bid on the contract and “after considering all factors, the evaluation team concluded that Lamers Bus Lines, Inc had proposed an adequate service at a reasonable cost for Valley Transit.”
The commission will also be receiving several information items, including information on reapplying for federal funds for the Whitman Facility Remodel Phase 2 project, and update on the mobility management and travel training program, and the financial report and ridership report for January 2024.
The fixed route ridership in January of 2024 was right around 55,000 which was where it was in January of 2023. This is well below pre-Covid levels which were 77,000 in 2019 and 84,000 in 2020.
