The Parks and Recreation Committee met 08/23/2023. It was a brief meeting lasting only 5 minutes. They approved a resolution to apply for a grant and they received the July revenue report for Reid Golf Course.
I’ve prepared a transcript of the discussion for download.
Resolution R-2023-03 directed Dean Gazza, the Director of Parks, Recreation, and Facilities, to apply for a grant to develop the Powerline Trail in Southpoint Commerce Park.
The committee didn’t discuss the item and simply voted to approve it. This looks like it is related to the trail the city wants to put through Southpoint Commerce Park. That trail was envisioned as being able to hook up with the WE Energies Trail that was put on hold due to groundwater issues, but even though part of that trail is currently on hold, this section of trail further east ward is able to be built.
The committee also received an update on Reid Golf Course’s participation rates and revenue for the month of July. Parks and Recreation Deputy Director Tom Flick was very pleased with the trends, saying, “[T]he golf course continues the trend in amazing records every month. We’re setting rounds in excess of 8000 back-to-back months of June and July, which we’ve never done in the history. We continue to break gross revenue records. Again, June and July. We don’t know when it’s going to stop. I guess it won’t until we run out of tee times. But until that happens, we’re remaining extremely profitable.”
He estimated they were $100,000 head of where they were year-to-date last year for gross revenue.
Alderperson Nate Wolff (District 12) asked what the numbers were like four years ago. Deputy Director Flick said that pre-Covid the golf course netted $60-$70,000 a year, but that has increased dramatically since Covid happened. Last year they netted around $170,000, and this year, if the weather remained good, they were projecting over $250,000. Even if the fall was cold and wet, they expected they would most likely exceed $220,000.
[I pulled up the October report for 2029. At the end of the October 2019, year-to-date, 2,004 18-hole rounds had been played on the course and 10,284 9-hold rounds had been played. Gross revenue was $719,087.08. Now, in 2023 at the end of July with three more months of play to go, the golf course had already seen 2,808 18-hole rounds played and 10,398 9-hole rounds played. It’s gross revenue sits at $786,699.48.]
