Municipal Services Committee Meeting Today 08/21/2023 – Will Vote On Grant Application To Replace Traffic Controllers, Request From Police Department To Allow Community Service Officer Vehicles To Be Parks On Elm Street

The Municipal Services Committee is meeting today, 08/21/2023, at 4:30PM.

They have three action items on the agenda.

The first is a request to approve a grant application for funds to replace 21 existing traffic computers/controller and software along State Highways 47, 96, and 125. The city is hoping to be able to replace these controllers because “our experience with [the city’s current] Siemens brand control equipment and software has had a steady decline. The result of this decline is increased time and operational costs. There continues to be a growing number of significant operational concerns, leaving us with diminished functionality and impeding our ability to properly operate our system. More importantly, we have experienced a growing lack of response to the issues we identify and bring to their attention, and little to no updating of the software, which presents a risk that our system could become unstable or unusable.”

The second item is a request from the Police Department to allow Community Service Van Parking Only along the 200 block of S Elm Street. That street runs along the Police Department building and currently has no permitted parking. The police department recently purchased three Ford Transit 150 vans for the Community Service Officer program. They are apparently more difficult to back up and park than other vehicles, so the Police Department would like to have a designated area for them.

Finally, there is a request to approve a new streetlight installation on W Wiland Lane for $4,673.49. Apparently, when the streetlights were originally installed one was overlooked, leaving a gap in the streetlight grid.

The committee will also, as an information item, be receiving the Parking Utility Monthly Revenue update for May, June, and July.
