Three Weeks After Community Conversation Lawrence University Still Silent On Why Union Street House Was Allowed To Degrade To The Point It Needed To Be Demolished

Back on 06/01/2023, Lawrence University held a community conversation regarding the house at 128 Union Street that has fallen into such disrepair that the university is now planning to demolish it.

During that listening session, a question that was raised was why had the house not been maintained and been allowed to fall into such disrepair that it needed to be razed? Lawrence President Laurie Carter did not answer that question, citing the fact that she only joined Lawrence in 2021.

It is, however, a question that I believe a lot of people still have and would like answered and that is relevant given the fact that the university owns multiple properties in the City Park area, several of which appear to have maintenance issues. President Carter had said that the university planned to paint two of the houses, but more than two look like they have problems that need to be addressed.

On 06/04/2023 I emailed Lawrence at the email provided during the community session and asked them if they could explain why the house had not been maintained and why it had been allowed to fall into such disrepair. It is now nearly 3 weeks later, and nobody from Lawrence has responded.
