Common Council Meeting 11/16/2022 – Will Vote On 2024 Aldermanic Salary

The Common Council is meeting 11/16/2022 at 7PM.

The agenda is fairly light and most of the items do not seem particularly contentious. No video was available for either the Finance Committee meeting or the Parks and Recreation Committee meeting on 11/07/2022, so I can’t speak definitively to how the discussions in those meeting went; however, the minutes from those meetings seem fairly straightforward and don’t hint at any disagreements or concerns about the items they voted to approve.

The one item that garnered any kind of negative pushback that I can think of is the Special Use Permit for a Holiday Gas Station on the corner of Calumet and Schaefer Street. The neighboring property owner opposed the special use permit being approved before the plan drawings were updated to show that Holiday would not be installing an access point to his property; however, because that issue was immaterial to the permit and such an access point could not be approved without the explicit permission of the adjacent property owner, the Plan Commission voted to approve the permit in spite of the neighbor’s objection.

I would expect that the item that garners the most amount of discussion will be the vote on the aldermanic salary for 2024. At 6:15PM, prior to the Council meeting, the Human Resources and Information Technology Committee will be considering and voting on a proposal to eliminate the aldermanic parking pass benefit and increase the annual aldermanic salary by $480, a 7.1% increase over their 2023 salary. No doubt, the discussion at the Council level will be shaped by what happens during that earlier meeting.
