Municipal Services Committee Meeting 09/26/2022 – Will Vote On Variance Request For Driveway Extension

The Municipal Services Committee is meeting 09/26/2022 at 4:30PM.

They have three action items they will be voting on including a request to award the 2022-2027 contract for sidewalk and crosswalk snow removal services and a request to approve a handicap-accessible parking stall on the 100 block of S. Locust Street.

The action item I would expect would garner the most discussion is a request from a property owner on Glendale Avenue for a variance to widen their driveway more than 4 feet into the front yard. The issue this particular property owner is facing is the fact that their house is on a corner lot so it has two front yards. They would like to install a 12-foot driveway extension which is permitted under the code for most properties, but has been denied in this particular instance for reasons the residents do no fully understand because, from their perspective their request seems to meet all the requirements laid out in the city code.

I did not get an opportunity to watch the 09/12/2022 Municipal Services Committee meeting in which this was originally discussed and voted on. Apparently, the Municipal Services Committee voted 3-2 to deny the variance request and there had been some discussion about the property owner being able to put a 4-foot driveway extension on each side of the driveway. Two of the residents appeared at the 09/21/2022 Common Council meeting and expressed dissatisfaction with that solution and a desire to install a full 12-foot driveway extension. The item ended up being referred back to the committee for further discussion.
