Common Council Approves Special Use Permit For Car Wash On North Side Of Town – Alderperson Wolff Thinks It Will Be A Nice Addition To The Area

One more car wash is coming to Appleton, this one on the north side of the city.

On 09/07/2022, the Common Council unanimously approved a special use permit for Club Car Wash to remove an existing car wash and construct a new car wash at 1920 E. Longview Drive, near the corner of Ballard and Northland.

This item had previously been unanimously approved by the City Plan Commission.

I was a little surprised when Alderperson Nate Wolff (District 12) asked for this item to be separated out for an individual vote and wondered if he was going to object to it for some reason, because there has been some recent opposition to car washes, but that has been mainly on the south side of town.

Alderperson Katie Van Zeeland (District 5) asked if someone on staff could refresh the Council members on what things they were allowed to take into consideration when deciding whether or not to approve a special use permit.

Community and Economic Development Director Karen Harkness referred to the staff report regarding the special use permit application and said that the finding of facts had to adhere to the zoning code. It could not be based on personal feelings. There needed to be facts behind the decision.

Alderperson Wolff said, “I just wanted to say I’m looking forward to the refacing of this car wash. I think that it’s gonna be a nice addition to that area.”

There was no further discussion and the Council voted 14-0 to approve the special use permit. So, it looks like Appleton can look forward to a new Club Car Wash on the south side of town at some point in the future.
