Utilities Committee Meeting 07/26/2022 – Will Vote On Eligibility Policy For Lead And Galvanized Steel Water Service Replacement Program

The Utilities Committee is meeting today, 07/26/2022, at 4:30 PM.

The one action item on the agenda is a request to approve the Lead and Galvanized Steel Water Service Replacement Program Eligibility and Participation Policy. Alderperson Brad Firkus (District 3) talked a bit about this policy on his aldermanic blog, saying, “The proposed policy will among other things require that a property owner be paid up on all property taxes and fees. While I get not wanting to spend money on properties that are currently delinquent, I wonder if the short-term inconveniences caused by properties being behind on any taxes or fees outweighs the benefit to the city in the long term, both in public health and land value improvements that come with eliminating lead service lines. This requirement might be a nice way to entice delinquent property owners who otherwise qualify for this program to get square with the city, but at the same time I’d hate to see us leave lead waterlines in service.”

The committee will also be receiving some 2nd quarter reports and the June 2022 water main break report. It looks like year-to-date we have identified 76 total water main breaks as compared to 65 at this time last year.
