Common Council Receives Covid-19 Update – Mayor Woodford Announces Covid-19 Updates To Council Will End, But Updates To Board Of Health Will Continue

During the 03/02/2022 Common Council meeting, the Council received a Covid-19 update.

Mayor Woodford announced that this would be the last Covid-19 report at Common Council meetings, although information would still be reported out at the Board of Health meeting, and if conditions changed, they could always start providing the information directly to the Council again.

Health Officer Sepers ran through the case counts for the last two weeks and reported that the city’s burden per 100,000 people currently stood at 276.

Under previous metrics, that meant that Appleton had dropped into the “high” category from the “very high” category, but he noted that in light of the new CDC guidance they were going to be revamping how this data was shown.

Under the old data Appleton had a 7-day disease transmission rate of 106.7 and had experienced between 2 new cases to 20 new cases per day over the 7-day period.

He touched briefly on the new CDC guidance that came out 01/28/2022. They created 3 categories: low, medium, and high, and calculated case rates per 100,000 residents.

Based on the new CDC guidelines, Outagamie, Winnebago, and Calumet counties, the three counties on which Appleton sits, were all in the “low” category. With the previous methodology Appleton had been in the “high” category because they had more than 50 cases in 7 days per 100,000 residents, but with the new CDC guidelines which incorporated both current Covid hospitalizations and disease transmission, Appleton fell into the “low” category.

He then reviewed the vaccination statistics from February 14th. He did not have more current numbers, but he said there hadn’t been much movement since the 14th.

He finished up by mentioning that, as of 02/28/2022, the city’s Covid testing site had moved from the Best Buy on Kensington Drive, next door to the building that used to house Office Max.

None of the alderpersons had any questions.
