It has now been approximately 21 months since Appleton had its first Covid case. I thought that, with the end of the year approaching, now might be a good time to compare Appleton’s coronavirus numbers now with where they were at this time last year.
Last year between March 18 and December 19, Appleton had 5,768 confirmed and probable coronavirus cases and 50 deaths with/from coronavirus. That works out to a death rate of 0.87%.
This year between March 18 and December 19, Appleton had 5,917 confirmed and probable cases and 14 deaths with/from coronavirus. That works out to a death rate of 0.24% which is less than 1/3rd of the death rate at this time last year.
I’ve included a chart of Appleton’s overall death rate over time based on confirmed and probable cases. I’ve started it at May 18, 2020 because testing was not widely available early on which really skewed the numbers and made the early weeks of the chart looks weird and unhelpful. Once testing became widespread, the numbers normalized and have shown a slow steady decrease for the last year and currently sits at 0.55%.
I also contacted Interim Health Officer Sonja Jensen regarding the year-to-date percentage of breakthrough cases in Appleton. As of 12/19/2021, the rate stood at 15.7%.
The last time the breakthrough percentage was reported was back on November 2nd when the YTD figure was 12.1%. Between September 16 and November 2nd approximately 21% of coronavirus cases were in fully vaccinated individuals.
Between November 3rd and December 19th, Appleton had 2,512 new cases, approximately 579 of which were breakthrough cases. That works out to a breakthrough rate of approximately 23% of the cases from 11/03/2021 through 12/19/2021.
