Board Of Education Meeting 11/08/2021 – Will Vote On Student Resource Officer And Crossing Guard Contract With Police Department

The Appleton Area School District Board of Education is meeting 11/08/2021 at 6PM.

Their will be two special presentations, one introducing the student school board representatives and one showing some of the ways AASD is celebrating Native American Heritage Month.

The Board will receive updates from Business Services, School Services, and Personnel Services.

The Business Services Update will include information on the School Resource Officer Program. The memorandum of understanding presented to the Board will “set forth guidelines to ensure that law enforcement, school officials, and the communities they serve, have a shared understanding of the School Resource Officer Program.”

It looks like the Board of Education will, later in the meeting, be voting on a contract with APD to provide School Resource Offers and Crossing Guard services.

The School Services update will include information on the Start College Now/Early College Credit Program. The program “allows students in grades 11 and 12 to take courses at institutions of higher learning at district expense to a maximum of 18 post-secondary credits.” Per the memo, the district pays “75% of the course tuition, fees, and course materials after a 25% tuition reimbursement coming from the Department of Workforce.” The agenda materials include a list of courses that were approved for this program and courses that were denied, but I don’t see much detail into what factors went into denying or approving a particular course.

The Personnel Services update will include information on educator hires and resignations as well as contract changes.

There will be a Superintendent’s Report as well s a report on Summer School 2021. Per the memo, 5,280 students participated in 2021 summer school. That is an increase of 3,451 students compared to the number who participated in 2020, but a decrease of 1,766 compared to 2019, the last normal year before the pandemic started.

The Board will also be voting on employ handbook revisions. These changes relate to pay for Facilities and Operations staff and are intended to clarify and define criteria for advancement. IT is estimated that these changes will result in an increase to the annual budget of $5,000.
