Board Of Building Inspection Meeting 08/02/2021 – Will Review Variance Request Regarding Non-Conforming Staircase Landing

The Board of Building Inspection is meeting 08/02/2021 at 4PM.

A homeowner wants to rebuild their stairs and in order to do that the stair landing would have to be 32” wide, but the Uniform Dwelling Code requires landings to be a minimum of 36” wide.

According to the property details on the city’s website, the house was built in 1921, so it sounds like they’re facing a similar issue to that faced by the last person who asked for a variance from the Board of Building Inspection, i.e. their house is older and was built before the Uniform Dwelling Code was created and, as sections of it need to be repaired, it’s either impossible or extremely difficult and costly to make those parts of the house conform with modern construction rules.
