Multiple Recognitions At The 05/12/2021 Board Of Health Meeting – Eggebrecht Retiring, Doug Nelson Stepping Down, Vaccine Clinic And Testing Site Closing

There were multiple recognitions that happened during the 05/12/2021 Board of Health meeting. It was the last Board of Health meeting for longtime board chairman Doug Nelson who was stepping down as well as for Health Officer Kurt Eggebrecht who had delayed his retirement last year due to the pandemic and is now departing. Health Officer Eggebrecht’s last day with the city will be June 4th.

Board member and retired Alderperson Cathy Spears was named the new committee chair. Doug Nelson spoke highly of his time on the board and of the many people he worked with over the years. Mayor Woodford praised his over 20 years of service. Mr. Nelson joked that he served since before the mayor was born. The mayor, also jokingly, said he was glad that comment was made off microphone. But those of us watching at home could still hear it even if it was off mic.

For his last day on the Board, Doug Nelson wore a special t-shirt emblazoned with a picture of Anthony Fauci and Kurt Eggebrecht along with the words “Thank You”. The last 15 or so minutes of the meeting were taken up with recognition and praise of Health Officer Eggebrecht.

Mention was made that the National Guard testing site will be closing at the end of the month. They were thanked for their efforts.

Health Officer Eggebrecht also specifically recognized and praised the people who volunteered at the Expo Center vaccine clinic. That is winding down and the last clinic will be held May 27th. As of 05/12/2021 they had given out 31,000 vaccine doses, and he did not want to underestimate the effort that went into that.

They are planning a celebration at the Red Lion for the individuals who donated at least 20 hours of their time at the clinic. Also as a way to honor them, Health Officer Eggebrecht included their names and pictures in the minutes for the meeting.

I don’t know if they intended this to be the case, but the two departures on top of the ending of the vaccine clinic as well as the closure of the National Guard testing site at the end of the month to say nothing of the discussion about Mile of Music taking place this summer, really gave the impression that things are changing, the pandemic is winding down, and we are ready to move forward toward other things.
