Finance Committee Meeting Scheduled For 03/08/2021

The Finance Committee is meeting on 03/08/2021 at 5:30pm.

Perhaps the most noteworthy item is that they will be voting on awarding a design and construction contract for the library project. This is still a very early step in the process–the precursor to actually having designs created.

11 different firms submitted proposals. eering services to redesign the Appleton Public Library (APL). An “11-person panel of City staff, elected officials and citizens” reviewed the proposals and narrowed them down to two. After having interviewed both those firms on 02/23/2021 and conducted further background research and discussion, the panel is now unanimously recommending that the city go with the firm of Skidmore, Owings & Merrill.

Another interesting item of note is that, in the early days of the pandemic, the city purchased 200 hospital-style beds as preparation for if the local hospitals reached their capacity. The plan was, if necessary, to set up the Fox Cities Expo Center as a facility to keep residents who were too sick to return yet. They never needed to implant that plan and now they have 200 hospital beds that they need to get rid of because they don’t have the storage capacity to hold onto them. After searching for a place to take them, they talked to WG&R whom they had purchased them from. WG&R “proposed an option that would (1) refund the City 25% of the cost of the bed frames along with the delivery/set-up charge, approximately $18,131 (which would be returned to the federal government) and, (2) distribute the entire allotment of mattresses to homes of children in need throughout Northeast Wisconsin through their charitable program called ‘Brighter Dreams.'”

There are also several other agenda items regarding ongoing projects and also a budget amendment.
