Board of Education To Reconsider Hybrid Learning Format

The agenda for the AASD Board of Education meeting on 12/14/2020 has been posted. There will be a work session at 4pm followed by the Board meeting proper at 6pm.

To refresh your memory as to what’s been happening at AASD, back on Nov. 30, they sent out a letter announcing their hybrid learning model scheduled to start 01/19/2021. It was going to consist of 4 half days per week for k-6 grade students. If that schedule didn’t work or if a parent didn’t want their child(ren) attending in person school, the deadline to switch to Elementary Virtual School was 12/07/2020.

My understanding is that multiple parents switched their children to Elementary Virtual School not because they didn’t want them to attend in-person classes but because the anticipated half days of school were unworkable with their job schedules.

Now, judging by the agenda, a week after the deadline parents were given to choose their children’s educational models for the next semester, it appears the Board of Education will be revisiting what school will look like in January with the possibility of changed it to two full day classes instead of 4 half day classes.

The work session will be reviewing 3 different hybrid models and then during the meeting itself one of the Board Business items is a potential update to the elementary hybrid model options.

Of note is the fact that they are recognizing that the half day hybrid option they are currently planning will cost “$85,000 per month in transportation, crossing guards, and disinfecting costs” whereas a 2 full day a week model would have no additional costs.

They are also giving consideration to the following: “As we have worked towards implementation of the recommended AM/PM Interim Hybrid Model, certain factors (i.e. transportation, child care, conflicting schedules for older siblings at the secondary level) present hardships for our families, which can create barriers for in-person opportunities for students. While our team continues to work diligently through these challenges, these and related factors are testing the limits of our current Framework, therefore requiring a more comprehensive review by the Board of Education.”
