Common Council Meeting 04/06/2022 – Mayor Will Present 2022 Sidewalk Poetry Program Winners

The Common Council is meeting 04/06/2022 at 7PM. This will be the last Common Council meeting with the current set of alderpersons serving before the newly elected group of alderpersons is sworn in.

In addition to presenting 6 different mayoral proclamations, Mayor Woodford will also be recognizing the poems selected for the 2022 Sidewalk Poetry Program. The poems that have been selected are not included in the agenda packet and are currently not posted on the city’s website with the other sidewalk poems.

Alderperson Sheri Hartzheim (District 13) has stated on her aldermanic website and earlier this year in an email to All Things Appleton that she feels the sidewalk poetry program “should run through the Appleton Public Arts Committee (or some other open meeting forum in city government) to allow for public input and review of the selections prior to the winners being announced to the council.” She is currently seeking feedback from the public regarding their feelings on the issue.

One never knows exactly which items from the agenda might be separated out for individual votes.

There was discussion in several committees about creating employment incentives for seasonal employees to make their pay more competitive. This plan was recommended for approval by the Finance Committee.

The Municipal Services Committee ended up recommending for denial proposed parking changes to Harris Street west of Mason Street after several neighborhood residents attended the meeting and voiced their opposition to the plan to eliminate two parking spots on Harris Street. The trial of the parking changes has been prompted by complaints from a resident and one other resident was supportive of the parking restrictions, so it will be interesting to see if anyone shows up to argue against the denial.
