Timeline and Procedures for Filling Leah Olson’s Board of Education Seat

The Board of Education held a special meeting at 12pm on 12/03/2020 to officially implement Rule 133 to fill the board vacancy left by Leah Olson’s resignation. The meeting was mercifully short and, thankfully, did not include a powerpoint by a member of the admin team explaining how Board vacancies are filled. All of the relevant information was still delivered.

The deadline for candidates to declare their interest is: 12/18/2020 at 4PM

What do candidates have to do?

  1. Submit a Letter of Interest in the position. This letter should include:
    • The name, residential address, and telephone number of the potential appointee.
    • The reason(s) that the candidate wants to serve on the Board.
    • The individual’s qualifications and experience relevant to the position.
    • Any items that the individual believes should be the School Board’s top priorities in connection with improving student achievement.
    • The individual’s general views regarding the role of the Board and role of the Superintendent and other administrative leaders.
    • The candidate’s availability for Board duties.
  2. Submit a Declaration of Eligibility to Hold Office attesting that:
    • You are not a convicted felon and “meet the applicable age, citizenship, residency, and voting qualification requirements prescribed by the constitutions and laws of the United States and the State of Wisconsin” and in all other respects legally qualify to serve on the AASD Board of Education

There will be a candidate orientation the week of December 21. This will be an option meeting for candidates to attend in which the AASD administration will give an overview of the district’s strategic plan, mission statement, and scorecard, as well as overarching info about the district and the role of the board.

Tentatively, the Board will hold a special meeting tentatively scheduled for 01/04/2021 to interview the candidates and vote for who they want to fill the vacancy. There is no pre-selection. Anyone who gets their paperwork correctly submitted by 4pm on 12/18/2020 and legally meets the requirements to hold office will go through the interview process tentatively scheduled for 01/04/2021.

The newly elected Board member would then be able to participate in the next Board of Education meeting which, currently, is scheduled for 01/11/2021. On January 8 and 9 the board is also holding a training session with the Coherent Governance consultants that they recently hired, and the new member would also participate in that.
