No Response From AASD Regarding The Impetus For Implementing Culturally Competent Practices Or The Metrics By Which Their Success Is Judged

As I posted a couple of weeks ago, the Appleton Area School District, under the guidance of Doctor Sharroky Hollie, engages in what they termed “culturally competent practices”.

Assistant Superintendent Steve Harrison gave an overview of these practices and explained, “Rather than this being a designated curriculum, we instead have worked to provide instruction and educational experiences that are culturally responsive to the diverse student population we serve. In particular, this means recognizing the various rings of culture that all of our students and staff have and how we must work collaboratively to validate, affirm, build, and bridge relationships with our students.”

Hoping to learn more, I emailed Superintendent Baseman and asked her when the Board of Education voted to implement these practices and what prompted AASD to institute them. Were there specific issues happening within individual schools or across the district as a whole that the Board and the administrative team felt could be corrected with culturally responsive practices? Additionally, I asked what the metrics were for measuring the success of the program.

It has been over a week since I contacted Superintendent Baseman and, in spite of following up once and eventually reaching out to the Board of Education, I have received no response.
