Board Of Education Meeting 08/09/2021 – Student Masking Not Explicitly On The Agenda; Will They Discuss It?

The Appleton Area School District Board of Education is meeting 08/09/2021 at 6PM.

This will be their first meeting after the resignations of former board members Barry O’Connor and Gary Jahnke became effective. The Board is scheduled to appoint two new Board members during the 08/23/2021 meeting, but for this coming meeting they will consist of only 5 members.

During the 07/23/2021 meeting, the Board of Education voted to approve the administrative team’s request to start the school year out with student masking recommended but not optional. Since that meeting, the CDC has updated its masking guidelines to recommend “universal indoor masking by all students (age 2 and older), staff, teachers, and visitors to K-12 schools, regardless of vaccination status” and a group of local healthcare providers has written a letter asking AASD to implement a universal masking policy. I would expect the issue of masking to be discussed during the Superintendent’s Report.

The Board will also be receiving multiple other reports including (a) Birth Through Age Three Curriculum Review/Revision, (b) attendance information, (c) At-Risk Supports, Services, and Programs for 2021-22, (d) Proposed Revision to Policy Rule 374 – Procedures for the Maintenance and Confidentiality of Student Records, and (e) Staffing Updates for the 2021-2022 School Year.

Additionally, they will be voting on the Birth Through Age Three Curriculum Revision, the At-Risk Supports, Services, and Programs for 2021-22, and the Policy 347-Rule, Student Records Revision.
