AASD Enrollment Down 5 Percent From Last Year

Greg Hartjes reviewed the Appleton Area School District’s enrollment numbers at the 11/09/2020 Board of Education meeting.

The state requires them to count enrollment on the 3rd Friday in September. On that day the total number of enrolled students was 15,690 students, which was 377 less than last year’s 3rd Friday count. However, they also had 2,134 students from outside the district open enroll into AASD which is the most open enrolled students they’ve ever had. 960 of those open enrolled into the Wisconsin Connections Academy, which is AASD’s virtual charter school.

Between the count on September 18 and the Board of Education meeting on 11/09/2020, they’ve had an additional 395 students withdraw from AASD.

98 of those withdrawals were Connections Academy students which is 20-30 more than usual. In a typical year, 70-80 students who have open enrolled into WCA will withdraw by the 2nd Friday of January which is the next time they verify their enrollment numbers.

In addition to the 98 Connections Academy withdrawals, they lost 25 students from 4k, 10 from the middle school level, 13 from high school, and 249 across their elementary schools.

All in all, if you add the 395 students who left after the 3rd Friday count to the 377 decrease they saw at the 3rd Friday count, it looks like AASD’s enrollment is down 772 from where it was last year.

If everything were normal they’d have approximately 16,067 students. Instead, they have 15,295 which is about a 5% decrease in enrollment from last year.
