Kay Eggert, Jim Bowman Speak About The Right Of Board Members To Participate In Political Campaigns

The Appleton Area School District Board of Education met 03/08/2021.

Board member Jim Bowman’s participation in a private campaign event for Ed Ruffolo was briefly touched; although, somewhat bizarrely, there has been, as of yet, no public acknowledgement from Ed Ruffolo as to whether or not he is actively seeking a position on the Board of Education.

Board of Education President Kay Eggert spoke and essentially reiterated what she said to me the other day–that Board members still maintain their First Amendment rights and, as individuals, can campaign for and support whomever they choose.

Jim Bowman also spoke and stressed that the courts have consistently found in favor of school board members being able to engage in political activity.

The ethics of campaigning for someone who tried to withdraw from the race after he was caught very publicly following quite a few erotica pages and who falsely represented to the community that he would not campaign were not discussed.
