Parks And Recreation Committee Meeting 08/25/2025 – Will Vote On Process To Rename Veterans Park Located Near Memorial Bridge

The Parks and Recreation Committee is meeting 08/25/2025 at 6PM.

They have one action item on the agenda which is a request to approve the process to rename Veterans Park. Now that Memorial Park has been renamed Veterans Memorial Park, the city needs to rename the small neighborhood park near Memorial Bridge that currently carries the name Veterans Park. City staff has proposed a process that involves seeking park name suggestions from the public which will then be reviewed by the Parks and Recreation Committee which will put together a list of 3-5 eligible submissions and recommend a final name for Common Council approval.

Eligible names for the park must conform to one or more of the following criteria:

1. The name of a significant local, state, or national historical figure that is deceased, or a significant local, state, or national historical event.
2. The name of an adjacent street.
3. The name of a unique geologic or geographic feature or other natural attribute that characterizes the park, e.g. a dominant tree species.
4. The name of a major donor instrumental in the acquisition or development of the park.
5. The commonly accepted name of the surrounding neighborhood which comprises a significant portion of the service area of the park.
6. An individual who has performed an outstanding service for the community (preferably in the area of parks and recreation).

As information items, the committee will be receiving the Reid Golf Course revenue and expense report for the month of July and the 2025 Parks and Recreation Mid-Year Report.
