The Parks and Recreation Committee is meeting 05/12/2025 at 6PM.
This is its first meeting since 03/10/2025. They will be electing a vice chair, setting a committee meeting time, and designating a contact person.
They have two main action items they will be voting on.
The first is a request from city staff to update park rules to prohibit alcohol beverages within 20’ of any pavilion or playground in order to “provide an improved environment for park patrons and children.” Additionally, city staff is recommending terminating the requirement for people to obtain a permit in order to consume alcoholic beverages within parks as they have “determined that this practice has been ineffective and time consuming for the police department staff.” [As you may recall, back in 2015, the Common Council approved a rule requiring park attendees to take out a permit in order to be able to drink alcohol in parks.]

The second is a request to approve Irish Fest of the Fox Cities’ request to hold a ticketed private special event in Jones Park 09/19/2025-09/20/2025.

Finally, the withdrawal of the request from Appleton Downtown Inc to install a selfie sculpture in Houdini Plaza is on the agenda, but because the request has been withdrawn no action needs to be taken.
