Board Of Health Meeting 11/13/2024 – Will Review And Vote On Appeal Of Prohibited Dangerous Animal Declaration

The Board of Health is meeting 11/13/2024 at 7AM.

Three of their action items look to be updates to Appleton Health Department policies.

The action item that I would expect to take up the most time is an appeal of a prohibited dangerous animal declaration. In November of 2023, Bear a male rottweiler/mixed-breed dog was declared a dangerous animal, and the owners were required to, amongst other things, register the dog as a dangerous animal and adhere to muzzle and leash laws. In 2023, the dog was ostensibly removed from the city, but the owner brought him back into Appleton on at least two different occasions recently during which the rules for maintaining dangerous animals were not adhered to. As a result, Bear was declared a prohibited dangerous animal and is no longer allowed in the City of Appleton.

The owner is appealing this declaration. He states Bear only visits Appleton and that he is willing to do whatever needs to be done to allow him back into the city. He also says that if Bear is not allowed back in Appleton, he will need to sell his house and move.

Email from the girlfriend of Bear’s owner

As information items, the board will be reviewing the 2025 Health Department grants budgets, the October newsletter, the 3rd quarter report, and the Director’s report.
