Human Resources And Information Technology Committee Votes To Hold 2026 Aldermanic Salary Discussion Until 09/11/2024 Meeting – Will Provide Time To Gather More Information On Inconsistencies And Inaccuracies Related To Previous Salary Increases

The Human Resources and Information Technology Committee met 08/28/2024. One of the items on the agenda was the aldermanic salary for 2026. At a motion by Alderperson Sheri Hartzheim (District 13), this item was held until the 09/11/2024 committee meeting to provide time for additional information on “historical inconsistencies and inaccuracies in previous increases” to be included in the agenda to facilitate a complete discussion.

I’ve prepared a transcript of the discussion for download:

The inconsistencies and inaccuracies in question are the $15,000 in overpayments made to the Common Council since 2017 that I posted about last week.

Since 2017, the aldermanic salary was increased 4 times when it should not have been. Once, the pay was increased even though the Common Council had voted to not increase it. This was noted in the aldermanic salary history that was provided to the committee.

On three other occasions, the salary was increased after the increase was voted in favor of by a majority of the Council but not 3/4th of the Council as required by State Statute. This was not noted in the aldermanic salary history included with the agenda.

Alderperson Hartzheim asked for the item to be held until the 09/11/2024 committee meeting to give time to add information on those past increases to the record. Assistant City Attorney Darrin Glad also noted that this hold would provide time to make sure that all the members of the Council and committee were aware of this information and would also give an opportunity to gather more background information on what had happened.

The committee voted 3-0 to hold the item until 09/11/2024.
