The Common Council met 12/20/2023. One of the items they took up was Resolution 14-R-23 which, if passed, would have bumped up the deadline for the delivery of the Executive Budget to the Common Council by a couple of weeks from the first Wednesday in October to the third Wednesday in September.
This resolution was unanimously recommended for denial by the Finance Committee after Finance Director Jeri Ohman explained to them the various factors that went into the budget timely and how getting the budget to the Council two weeks earlier would impact the process.
The Council only spent a couple minutes on the resolution, and such little was said that it is not necessarily even worth creating a transcript.
Alderperson Chris Croatt (District 14) was the only alderperson to speak on the resolution, saying, “I voted at committee to support the denial after hearing from director Ohman about all of the challenges that could be faced if this was to pass. I should preface that by saying I appreciate the work or the resolution that Alder Doran submitted to attempt to give Council more time to review the annual budget, which certainly could appreciate that. I think everyone could, you know, appreciate a little more time to review the budget. But there were a number of challenges stated by our Finance Director with different timelines related to State, communications, internal work, and I just felt like it was too big of a hurdle to get over to have the budget delivered a couple of weeks early. So that’s why I would recommend supporting the committee recommendation for denial of the resolution. Thank you.”
The Council then voted 11-1 to deny the resolution with Alderperson Chad Doran (District 15), the resolution’s author, casting the lone vote in favor of it.
