The Common Council met 07/20/2022. During the meeting Resolution 8-R-22 was introduced. Sponsored by Alderpersons Alex Schultz (District 9), Vered Meltzer (District 2), Israel Del Toro (District 4), Joss Thyssen (District 8), Denise Fenton (District 6), Nate Wolff (District 12), and Vaya Jones (District 10), the Resolution to Add Legalization Advisory Referendum to Fall Election Ballot would, as the title suggests, add an advisory referendum question to the November 8 ballot asking voters to answer yes or no to the following question: “Should marijuana be legalized for adult-use, taxed, and regulated like alcohol?”
The resolution has been referred to the Safety and Licensing Committee.
[I’m a little curious if advisory referendums like this actually change the opinions of state legislators or prompt them to take actions they otherwise would not have. The Council voted to put a non-binding referendum on the April 2021 ballot asking voters to weigh in on the creation of a non-partisan redistricting procedure. It cost the city $1,500 to do and, if the most recent state redistricting outcome is any indication, clearly didn’t influence anything. If we’re going to spend $1,500 to put a non-binding referendum on the ballot, it seems like a more useful issue to make it one would be one whether or not to increase the budget for the library project.]
