The Common Council will be holding an informal organizational meeting on 04/15/2025 at 6PM and then a formal organizational meeting on 04/16/2025 at 6PM. These meetings will take place after the Council members who were elected earlier this month are sworn in.
The meetings provide an opportunity for the Council to set its rules for the upcoming 2025-2026 Council year.
The informal meeting on 04/15/2025 provides an opportunity to go over the existing Council rules and discuss proposed changes is a somewhat more open and less structured way than at a traditional meeting.
During the formal meeting on 04/16/2025 they will be formally voting on proposed changes.
At this point, the one proposed rule change that the agendas indicate they will be discussing is the change that Alderperson Vered Meltzer (District 2) submitted as a resolution back in September of 2024. This rule change would require alderpersons to provide notice ahead of Council and committee meetings if they will be absent in order to be considered excused. Per the resolution, “A Council member who has been absent unexcused from three meetings within a Council year will forfeit their committee assignments and the Mayor shall appoint other Council members to fill the vacancies.”
