The Common Council met 03/19/2025. One of the items they separated out for an individual vote was the request to renew Appleton’s Bird City designation.

During the Parks and Recreation Committee meeting there had been a question as to how much the renewal cost. During the Council meeting it was noted that the annual renewal cost $175 and was included in the budget under “Other Contracts and Obligations.”
Earlier in the meeting, in lieu of an aldermanic invocation, the Council had held a moment of silence to remember former Alderperson Joe Martin who had passed away on 03/08/2025. During the committee meeting, Alderperson Katie Van Zeeland (District 5) had taken the opportunity to remember him, saying, “He was passionately devoted to this committee and spearheaded the Bird City movement. I hope that his friends and family know that they are in our thoughts and our prayers, and I hope that they find comfort knowing the positive impact that he had on this community.”
During the Common Council meeting, Alderperson Denise Fenton also took time to remember him, saying, “[T]hank you for the moment of silence in place of the invocation today. And thanks to Alder van Zeeland who acknowledged how very, very important this designation was to our colleague, Joe Martin. And this the Bird City Designation, Monarch City, Bee City were—he was passionate about those things. And so, you know, I am going to happily, happily vote for this renewal. And I’m gonna think about Joe every time that I see the signs and I see the logo on our website. Thank you.”
