After Being Convicted Of Dispensing Alcohol To Minors, Both Mr. Frogs And Broken Tree Pizza Decline To Send Representatives To The Safety And Licensing Committee To Explain What Steps They Are Taking To Prevent Further Alcohol Demerit Point Violations In The Future

The Safety and Licensing Committee met 01/22/2025. Two of the items on the agenda were public appearances by representatives of Mr. Frogs and Broken Tree Pizza to talk with the committee about what they were doing to decrease their risk of getting demerit point violations on their alcohol licenses.

Neither business sent a representative to the committee so the discussions did not happen. The lack of appearance by representatives of either of these establishments does not result in any further demerit points repercussions in any way.

Mr. Frogs received 80 demerit points for Underage Person(s) on Premises and an additional 80 demerit points for Dispensing Alcohol To Minor for a total of 160.

Broken Tree Pizza received 80 demerit points for Dispensing Alcohol to Minor and 40 for No Licensed Operator on Premises for a total of 120.

Wisconsin State law is a little odd in that the demerit points for dispensing alcohol to minors can only become actionable if an establishment has more than one violation in a 12-month period. So, each of these businesses practically speaking have 80 fewer demerit points that it appears that they do unless they get caught serving alcohol to minors again within 12 months. That means Mr. Frog’s only had 80 actionable demerit points and Broken Tree Pizza only has 40 actionable demerit points.

Normally a business with 150 or more demerit points, such as Mr. Frogs, would be facing a temporary suspension, but since only 80 of those demerit points are actionable Mr. Frogs will not be facing temporary suspension at this time.

The alcohol license of Mr. Frogs has a bit of a history at the Safety and Licensing Committee. In July of 2024 and alcohol license application for Mr. Frogs was withdrawn by the applicant, Julia Nino Gomez, after the committee initially voted to deny the application due to her connection with drug dealers and drug dealing. A new application was then submitted, this time with a different individual, Vanessa Alvarado, listed as the applicant. This application was approved without any discussion at the 08/14/2024 committee meeting.

[I don’t know why the Common Council hasn’t taken steps to give teeth to the requirement that businesses with demerit point violations come to the committee and discuss the steps they’re taking to prevent similar violations from happening in the future.]
